The Twin Cities Area Chapter held a quarterly meeting on Saturday, February 2, 2008, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Golden Valley MN. After a business meeting, local author Sharon Hinck shared her own experiences in the church library and how they shaped her into the Christian author she is today.

Sharon’s works include Symphony of Secrets, The Sword of Lyric Series, and The Becky Miller Series. Sharon is often asked, “What invited you into your church library?”. The availability of Christian fiction helped shape her passion for Christian writing. She said it was especially important for her as a teen because she could read whatever she wanted without worrying about the appropriateness of the material. She added that teens don’t want to be appealed to as teens, but rather, want to be able to pick up adult books. The church library is one place teens can do this without parents having to worry about the appropriateness of the content. Because of her experiences in her church library growing up, Sharon felt especially indebted to her church librarian. Sharon said she began to look at the church librarian as a hero. It was a touching moment to learn that two of Sharon’s heroes were in the audience that day, her mother and her childhood church librarian. Through her fiction writing, she developed a new image of what a hero looks like ordinary people who are called to be heroes in ordinary ways.

The second speaker was a representative from Northwest Bookstores, a local Christian bookstore chain. Beverly Snyder, Special Events Coordinator, brought some of her favorite selections for the group to preview and had books available for sale afterwards. It was a full morning capped off by the opportunity to meet one another and share ideas. Let us know if you’re thinking
